Among the many activities, recreational and school, that children carry out day after day, it would be good if parents were encouraged and committed to adding some other related and oriented to the care of the environment. And it is that environmental education is a pending issue in many homes. Children can and should participate in this necessary task of take care of our natural environment, and thus acquire the habit of taking care of nature and the planet.

We tell you what the golden rules are, the definitive decalogue, so that children take care of the environment.

The World Association of Early Childhood Educators (AMEI) offers a decalogue for children with tips on how they can take care of the environment. There are 10 'golden' rules for children to put into practice and can contribute to the protection of the environment:

1. Recycling is a very fun game, it is putting everything in the right color cube. exist containers different for each type of garbage, according to its material. Separating garbage can be very entertaining, as well as an ecological habit that we must learn and practice.

2. Water is a rare commodity. When you brush your teeth after eating or your hands before every meal, you must not forget to turn off the tap. The world will thank you for saving water.

3. Don't throw papers on the floorFor that, very clever children have invented the wastebaskets. If you go for a walk down the street and you don't see any trash, put whatever you want to throw away in your pocket and throw it away at home, in the bucket of the corresponding color. You must be an accomplice of the people who work for the good of our environment.

4. Turn off the light in the room (room, kitchen, living room, etc.) every time you go out. And don't take too long with the light on. Save electrical energy.

5. How resources are limited, share your toys and your school supplies with other children. When you don't use them anymore, pass them on to other children. They will also enjoy them very much and we will get them to have a second useful life.

6. When you want to draw, take advantage of the back of an already used sheet, so you'll be recycling paper.

7. Plants are living beings, therefore they should not be stepped on or uprooted and you have to water them daily. They depend on human care.

8. Pets are companion animals that are in your care. That is why you have to feed them, drink them, take them to the vet frequently (not only when they get sick), play with them, take them for a walk to go to the bathroom, give them affection ... And above all, do not do things to them that they can upset, hurt or make them suffer.

9. The things in the street belong to everyone and they must not be damaged, broken or dirty.

10. You have to take care and respect the enviroment, but you also have to respect and care for the people around you.

Environmental education can be acquired at school, through the different resources that teachers have at their disposal. However, parents must also transmit to our children the need to take care of the environment that surrounds us. To do this, we must offer them a more ecological and natural vision of our day to day. Here are some ideas to get it!

- Become an example of environmentalism
There is no better tool than the example to procure learning in children. Therefore, parents must be the first to adopt a more conscientious and environmentally friendly way of life.

- Take advantage of all the food
Planning what we are going to eat and preparing the quantities we need is a good way to fight against food waste, one of the main problems that our current production system faces. In addition, we can promote and accustom our children to buying 'ugly' fruit and vegetables, the one that is usually discarded in stores because it does not meet the expected aesthetic standards (but which, nevertheless, is as delicious as any other piece).

- Reduce the use of plastic at home
Gestures as simple as carrying the snack sandwich in a tupper (instead of in aluminum foil) or using reusable glass bottles, teach children to lead a life with less plastics.

- Make field trips
We will not be able to educate our children about the importance of caring for nature, if they never have contact with it. For this reason (and because it is very fun) we must organize excursions to natural environments such as rivers, beaches, mountains, valleys ... And, of course, have an attitude of respect when we enjoy these places.

- Plant a small garden
Have you ever thought of preparing a small garden to which the children have access and can thus learn to care for and cultivate the land? It is a wonderful experience that encourages them to adopt a more ecofriendly attitude, as they are more aware. You can also encourage yourself to plant a tree!

Education in values and our example are the main tools to teach children to take care of the environment. However, we can also use children's games to convey ecological awareness. Here are some ideas for you.

- Create posters that remind us how beautiful our planet is (and how we destroy it)
Through photos that we can find on the internet or by creating our own posters ourselves, we can organize a temporary exhibition at home in which we talk about some of the consequences of environmental deterioration. It is a very entertaining activity and, in addition, it will help us raise awareness among our children.

- The superhero against water waste
This game is proposed to us from the Early Childhood Education Guide, valuing and caring for the environment from early childhood of the Government of Chile. It is as simple as using different waste materials that we have around the house (toilet paper rolls, papers, wool, etc.) to create our own superhero against the waste of water.

Once finished, we will agree on what your superpowers and actions are. We will place it next to the bathroom or kitchen faucet and, in this way, every time we see it we will remember that we must always close it when we are not using the water. Water wastage is over!

- Our nature notebook
We can spend an afternoon making recycled paper and use it to create a beautiful notebook. We will invite our children to write down in this homemade book all their impressions about nature that inspire them.

For example, you can draw a type of flower that you have seen in the park, you can point out some improvements that we can make at home to be more ecological, you can write all the new things about nature that you learn ...
