The causes of the baby withdrawing from the breast can be many, and generally if we know what the reason is, we can solve the problem. But locating the reason is not always easy, and sometimes several causes are mixed together. It is something that happens quite frequently, and in fact, almost all babies have some episode or period of rejection during breastfeeding, which is usually transitory and does not mean the definitive withdrawal of breastfeeding.

During the first hours of life, the baby will naturally not want to breastfeed after the first breastfeeding, becoming a little sleepy for a few hours. You have to try to keep it close, in skin-to-skin contact, so that when you wake up you have your chest within reach. But why does the baby reject the breast later, if the breastfeeding process started without problems? Here are some of the reasons:

- If the baby only wants to suckle from one breast at a time it is a "false rejection". The reason is that you are totally satisfied with the milk you get from just one breast and you don't need to eat anymore. By the second or third month, the baby knows how to eat faster and may surprise the mother.

- In the event that you constantly reject a breast, and only want to suckle from a specific one, it may be because posture is inappropriate and makes it difficult to grasp, due to nipple alterations, because the baby has something that hurts on the supporting side (ear, clavicle fracture, discomfort in the arm after the vaccine, hematoma on the head after delivery ...)

- If the mother has mastitis, the taste of the milk tends to change and the child tends to reject the affected breast.

- If the baby rejects both breasts it may be for changes in routines (incorporation of the mother to work, moving, traveling, starting daycare ...) Also if the mother has her period or is pregnant, which can vary the taste of the milk. Or if the mother's scent changes (new soaps, strong perfumes or deodorants, excessive sweating).

- It may be that baby freaks out while breastfeeding, with a loud noise or sudden movements.

- In cases of allergy to milk, the baby may manifest discomfort after or during the feeding. If the baby has gas, he may be upset during the feeding, leaning back as if arching and crying.

To improve these situations it is necessary to try to calm down, and understand that the mother can help the child to hook up well. Must stimulate skin-to-skin contact, the breastfeeding position can be changed and the mother must remove the milk from the breast that she rejects so as not to cause engorgement or mastitis and not to decrease the milk production in that breast.

We must arm ourselves with patience, because we see that the causes are diverse. You should always show a lot of love to the baby and encourage skin-to-skin physical contact.
