We were born ready for the move. Disordered, even chaotic, motor acts from the first months of life gradually transform into well-coordinated and controlled movements up to the age of 2-3 years. The concept of motility is defined as a trait of the human being, born and acquired, to react with the help of the locomotive apparatus to external and internal stimuli, in the form of a movement.
The arrival of a child in the world is a huge reason for joy in a family, but its harmonious growth and development is not always easy. Each child is different from a multitude of points of view, and its motility and evolution are no exception to the rule. However, in order for the parents to be able to monitor the evolution of the new income, several aspects characteristic of the motor development on age intervals have been delimited.
The baby's motility develops actively between 12 and 36 months, starting with the first steps that give her the freedom to explore the environment voluntarily. Also in the same period, the danger of accidents increases, therefore the absolute vigilance of the adults who take care of the curious nazdravan is necessary.
Up to 15 months, the baby's motility (all the nervous and muscular functions that allow the voluntary and automatic movements of the body) is limited to grasping and acquiring the body balance. The ability to walk allows the little boy an independence in gestures, which begin to specialize: some are based on the imitation of others, others come instinctively.
Fine motor skills
Fine motor skills develop from general motor skills. From 11-12 months, the child tries to catch objects with the tips of his fingers, attempts that know a continuous improvement up to 24 months. From 2 years, the small child (the toddler) becomes much more capable and takes things with all his hand, pipes any object he finds and takes it to his mouth, this being his automatic way of knowing.
Another way to inspect a new object is to throw it, look at it as it falls, then place it somewhere else and manipulate it in different ways to fully perceive it. Also, this phase of child development involves an overflowing curiosity, which pushes him to control the cabinets, drawers, hidden corners, trash and any other areas that are accessible to him.
Therefore, physical accidents or intoxications can easily occur, without careful supervision by parents, grandparents or other caregivers.
The movements from 12 to 24 months are softer and more accurate, the child becomes interested in the games that require his attention, he discovers the pleasure of running and of moving. Drawing is another common passion at this age, even if the result materializes in interrupted, twisted or pressed lines.
Physical development of the child at 12-15 months
- he stands alone;
- it is possible to take the first steps (on the tips and with the legs in external rotation - the fingers towards the outside);
- push, throw and throw objects;
- collect toys / objects in boxes then dump them;
- feeds by hand;
- some children (in a small percentage) try to use the spoon / glass, thus working on the "eye-hand" coordination;
- climb the stairs "in four legs".
Motility of the child at 16-18 months
- can walk alone;
- to be mounted on furniture / chairs, etc .;
- he rises from the floor without help;
- bends over objects;
- sometimes it becomes unbalanced;
- play with the ball;
- return book groupings of books;
Motor development at 19-24 months
- goes without help and sometimes runs;
- climb the stairs with the back straight supported by one hand or by hand on the rail (~ 21 months);
- "sutures" the ball forward (~ 22 months);
- throw the ball from the bottom up;
- pull toys after him / her;
- uses the spoon;
- open doors (~ 23 months);
- go down the stairs with your back straight supported by one hand or by hand on the rail (~ 24 months).
At 25-30 months, the baby's movements are well defined
- run well;
- falls rarely;
- go up and down the stairs alone;
- stand on one foot without help;
- tiles using circular motions and can draw vertical lines;
- turn the pages of books one by one;
- they wash and dry their hands;
- it is possible to show a preference for the left or right hand.
Motility of the child at 31-36 months
- salt on one leg;
- draws / copies circles and squares;
- uses scissors for cutting;
- draws a person with 2 to 4 morphological characteristics;
- catch the ball that jumps in most attempts;

Walking. At what age do babies go?
Walking is one of the most discussed and controversial topics in the groups of new mothers. Frequently Asked Questions:
- when should it work?
- what are the steps a baby has gone through to reach a safe, unsustainable gait?
- why doesn't it still work and especially how can I stimulate it to work?
To these questions we will answer in the following lines.
According to statistics, between 9 and 12 months the child goes to the stand position. In this stage orthostatism is obtained by firing (the baby pulls the furniture, climbs with his hands on the parent's feet / cribs, etc.). Following are the first steps made with the support of the palms on different surfaces (furniture / wall). Later, the walk will be done with the support of the parents.
Patrupedia or "walking in four paws", walking the bus, (7-16 months) is another stage in the installation of the walk, but this is not mandatory. About 15% of children skip this phase.
By the age of 18 months, the child's ability to move increases considerably. At first the walking will be uncertain, with the wide base of support (legs apart), the arms oriented anteriorly or upwards to balance the body. Walking on uneven surfaces (a carpet rug, sand, etc.) is difficult.
Gradually, walking will become more stable, more secure. The base of support will narrow, the arms will lower to the body so that in the end to swing alternately.
For stimulation of walking, it is very important for the baby to walk barefoot on different surfaces (grass, sand, etc.). Thus, proprioceptors will be strongly stimulated, the muscles and balance will develop harmoniously.
Another way to encourage walking is to use push-button toys (for example, strollers for toys). Thus the child will move independently (without the help of the parent), but will still benefit from support.
It is important to remember that development is not a race. Babies develop at their own pace and in their unique style. Some children do not get to fulfill all the functions characteristic of their age category, especially if they were born before term, but this fact should not discourage us.
If you notice any delays in the child's motor development, it is best to consult a pediatrician.
The pediatrician will carry out age-specific tests, and if there are really concerns, he will definitely guide you to the most efficient methods and means of solving them.
Development of motor skills in young children
Here are some simple games and activities through which you can help your child develop his motor skills.
Development of "hand-eye" coordination:
- throwing, catching and rolling balls of different sizes;
- in the case of children under the age of 2, it starts by running the balls on the ground (it mimics the bowling game);
- teach the child to throw the ball in a bucket / basket.
Climbing and maintaining balance
- walking / running on sand or rubber surfaces;
- creating a "pillow mount" for the child to climb / walk;
- use of a small slide with several steps;
- draws a line on the floor on which the child must step;
- stick sheets of paper on the floor from place to place, the child will jump from one to the other (with or without help).
Running and jumping
- let the child jump on the bed / a low trampoline while holding it with both hands;
- allows the child to carefully use a jumping ball / a horse under careful supervision (be careful to touch the ground with both feet);
- draw a running track in the park for your child and his friends.
Swimming / water activities
- aquatic activities support the development of coordination and help the child become comfortable with his own body;
- supports optimum muscle development;
- take into account your child's fears and do not force their limits (for example, some children avoid sinking their heads). Give it an adaptation period;
- for the efficiency of aquatic education programs it is important to call on the support of a specialist in the field.
- corrects muscular imbalances and joint disorders;
- stimulates the development of the muscles at an optimal level and in accordance with the age;
- supports joint stabilization (ankle, knee, pelvis, etc.);
- improves motor functions.

According to a recent study in the journal Breastfeeding Medicine, fewer than 1 in 5 women surveyed said their doctor had told them that breastfeeding could protect their health.
It's no secret that breastfeeding benefits babies. It can shield them from illnesses, allergies, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and may even boost their intelligence.
But moms who breastfeed get lots of perks, too: Your risk of getting breast cancer, ovarian cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis all decrease if you breastfeed, studies show.
Breastfeeding can also reduce your stress level and your chances of experiencing postpartum depression. Yet out of 724 moms surveyed by researchers at Ohio State University, only 120 reported hearing from a healthcare provider that breastfeeding benefits their long-term health. Although more than half of the moms said they were aware that breastfeeding reduces breast cancer risk, most found out about it in the media or online.
Why does this matter? Because, according to the study, women who knew about the ways breastfeeding could benefit their own health nursed about four months longer on average than women who weren't informed of these advantages.
African American women, who have the lowest breastfeeding rate in the nation, were less likely than women in other groups to know about the link between breastfeeding and reduced breast cancer risk. The study suggests there is a need for healthcare providers to improve their communication to mothers about this benefit of breastfeeding because of the impact it appears to have on whether women breastfeed and for how long.
