"My two sisters had to do gestational diabetes screening, should I do one too?" Anna Roy, midwife in Paris, answers Karen's question.

The answer of Anna Roy, liberal and hospitable midwife in Paris

  • Diabetes is a metabolic disorder. It corresponds to a rise in the concentration of glucose, a sugar, in the blood a hyperglycemia. Gestational diabetes is diabetes that occurs during pregnancy.
  • Transient and cyclical, gestational diabetes or diabetes in pregnancy can affect women who have never had diabetes before and do not necessarily have land and hereditary predispositions, parameters that increase the risk of diabetes in pregnancy.
  • It can be declared following a significant weight gain. If it disappears most often after delivery, it must be supported and detected during pregnancy because it is not without risks.
  • A fetus developing with maternal diabetes, may take too much weight (macrosomia), which could disrupt the smooth delivery. In addition, he is at risk of having metabolic disorders and requiring medical surveillance. On the mother's side, 50% of women with gestational diabetes are at risk of developing permanent diabetes, early in those who are obese and those with a family history of diabetes Management of gestational diabetes is based on surveillance peculiar pregnancy with nutritional measures limiting weight gain, regular control of blood sugar and sometimes insulin injections.
  • Gestational diabetes is diagnosed with a fasting blood test. This screening is performed according to the risk factors, mainly in women over 35, in overweight and obese, or in those who have already given birth to a child over 4 kg. Women who have already had diabetes in a previous pregnancy, women with diabetes in their family (relatives of the first degree) are also concerned. Finally, a pregnant woman whose two sisters have been screened for gestational diabetes, either because they have gained a lot of weight or because they have family risk factors, will certainly also have to be screened.

The main character in Jupiter Ascending is Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who lives in Chicago with her mother and extended Russian immigrant family. She cleans the houses of rich people and dreams of buying a telescope to view the stars. Jupiter's life is suddenly disrupted when three intergalactic bounty hunters appear on the scene, with several alien creatures called keepers (who are able to disguise themselves as humans). These aliens all want to kill Jupiter. Luckily for her, a genetically engineered alien warrior (part human, part wolf) named Caine Wise (Channing Tatum) has been sent to protect her. He rescues Jupiter from the evil aliens just in time.
As the story unfolds we learn that Jupiter is the genetic reincarnation of a dead alien queen who, before her death, owned the planet Earth. Unfortunately the dead alien queen left behind three tyrannical evil heirs, all of whom want to kill Jupiter so that they can own Earth. The three heirs are Balem Abrasax (Eddie Redmayne), Titus Abrasax (Douglas Booth) and Kalique Abrasax (Tuppence Middleton). For thousands of years, they have lived by harvesting the inhabitants of alien planets and turning them into an elixir to rejuvenate their ancient bodies. They intend to do this with Earth's inhabitants too.
Jupiter is kidnapped by each of the three Abrasax siblings in turn, and each tries either to kill Jupiter or bend her to their will. Fortunately Caine rescues Jupiter each time, but in the end Jupiter must come to terms with her destiny.

It bites him on the neck, and he punches it in the head. The fight ends when the creature is slammed through a glass floor and left hanging by the neck.
  • A male humanoid slaps a woman hard across the face several times, then drags her across the ground by her hair and grabs her by the throat. The woman knees him in the groin. In a later scene she shoots the same man in the foot. They viciously kick and punch other. The man attacks the woman with a metal bar, stabbing her throat and striking her several times across the body. He tells her that he murdered his mother in the same way. The woman kicks him and bashes him over the head several times with a metal bar then sinks her fingers into a bloody wound on his leg. The man screams out in pain and falls from a ledge.
  • In one scene several unconscious human bodies float in a room aboard an alien spacecraft. Mechanical arms with probes and circular saws approach the floating bodies and puncture one of the bodies in the head. While watching the probes attack the floating bodies, an alien talks about harvesting humans and the quality of human skins. In a later scene a dragon-like creature is tortured by the same probes.

Ideas to discuss with your children

Jupiter Ascending is a science fiction action drama from the makers of The Matrix trilogy. The story is predictable, and the movie seems like a patchwork of numerous similar movies and books with familiar creatures and characters. Although the action scenes are fast paced and have a lot of stylised fighting, there is nothing new in this movie.

There are many scary characters, as well as violent and disturbing scenes, which justify the movie's M rating. It's too disturbing for young children and not recommended for children under 13 years. Some younger teenagers might need parental guidance.

The main message from this movie is that being part of a loving family is worth more than being a queen or owning a planet.

This movie could give you the chance to talk with your children about how the film objectifies women, specifically as sexual playthings.

7 Riddles That Will Test Your Brain Power

Gnomeo and Juliet

The star-crossed lovers in this animated version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet are garden gnomes who belong to two different tribes, one blue and one red. The tribes live in neighbouring gardens belonging to the Montague and Capulet families. Although this story isn't as tragic as the original, there's still a lot of competition and warring between the two tribes.

Gnomeo (voice of James McEvoy) is the son of Lady Blueberry (Maggie Smith), the leader of the Blues. Juliet (Emily Blunt) is the daughter of Lord Redbrick (Michael Caine), the leader of the Reds. Gnomeo and Juliet meet by accident, unaware that they're from opposing tribes. They instantly fall in love. Things get tricky when they realise that their love is doomed, but Juliet is a headstrong girl, determined to break away from her overprotective father.

Gnomeo and Juliet feel that their love is stronger than family rivalry and continue their romance with almost disastrous consequences.

Tribal feuds

This movie contains some violence. For example:

  • Gnomeo and Tybalt (voice of Jason Statham) have a fierce lawnmower race. Tybalt forces Gnomeo off the track, and Gnomeo crash-lands on the road.
  • A donkey kicks some small gnomes.
  • Red and blue gnomes fight each other with garden spades.
  • Tybalt almost runs down Benny, a red gnome. Tybalt attacks Benny with a spade and chops his hat off.
  • Benny and Tybalt fight. Tybalt runs into a wall and smashes himself to pieces.
  • Gnomeo gets kicked onto the road. For a while, it looks like he has been run over by a truck and smashed to pieces.
  • The Terrafirminator crashes into the Red garden and destroys everything. Then it gets out of control and does the same to the Blue garden. In the process it crashes into Juliet's pedestal and knocks her into the water.
  • Red and Blue gnomes fight each other with bows and arrows and catapults.

Content that may disturb children

Under 5

In addition to the violent scenes mentioned above, this movie contains some scenes that could scare or disturb children under five, especially in the 3D version. For example:

  • A large bulldog with big teeth growls and snarls at Juliet.
  • The Terrafirminator is a huge fierce lawnmower (described as a weapon of mass destruction) and looks quite scary.
  • Featherstone - a garden flamingo - is thrown away into a shed.
  • Gnomeo is apparently smashed to pieces.
  • As the blue gnomes prepare for battle, they paint black war paint on their faces.
  • Gnomeo and Juliet fall out of a tree and into a pond, where they sink.
  • Gnomeo gets his head stuck in the fence.
  • A dog picks up Gnomeo in his mouth.
  • Gnomeo is picked up by a backhoe and thrown into a park.
  • Juliet is glued to her pedestal by her father.

Ideas to discuss with your children

Gnomeo and Juliet is an animated comedy with some typical British humour and references to Shakespeare. It's aimed at children but has some adult concepts that children might find hard to understand. It's voiced by a stellar cast, with 3D animation and Elton John music.

The main message from this movie is that love can overcome all difficulties, including cultural difference.

Values in this movie that you might want to reinforce with your children include acceptance of difference, courage and respect for parents.

This movie could also give you the chance to talk with your children about the following real-life issues:

  • the absurdity of hating a group of people because they're different in some way
  • the futility of fighting over things that don't really matter.

Your baby's IQ will be lower if you get hungry!

The results of a new study show that a calorie-poor diet or weight loss in early pregnancy can adversely affect fetal brain development, a child may have lower IQ, and may have a lower incidence of diabetes.

Researchers at the University of Texas have found that poor nutrition in the first half of pregnancy causes severe damage to the fetus: less cell-to-cell contact and cell proliferation. This is the most critical time in fetal life when nerve cells and brain cells develop, he says. Dr. Peter NathanielszAlthough two groups of papaya were observed in the study, the results are also valid for humans, according to the researchers. One group could eat anything it just wanted to get pregnant in the first half, while the other group received 30 percent lower fall in nutrition.

Your baby's IQ will be lower if you get hungry!

The results showed that caloric poor nutrition influenced the development of several hundred nerve cells and genes. This negative effect is manifold in the case of teenage mothers, who are still growing, and older mothers, who are less effective in providing nutrients to the baby.
The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Baby Room: It reveals how much damage we cause in embryonic development when we are barely eating anything in the midst of the destruction of the first third of the equilibria. Indeed, the exact explanation for this is not yet known, but it is certain that it is associated with high levels of corpus luteum hormone. It is conceivable that just avoiding back-eating (starving) is the cause of the strange phenomenon. In fact, many little children are selective in their insanity and in their strange ways of eating unhealthy food.
However, the maternal reserves, if not given before pregnancy, are sufficient for the first 12-16 weeks of weaning. It may also help you to eat too much and too little to keep your blood sugar level down too much, as this may increase your stomach cavity.

At the end of January or the beginning of February, the Chinese calendar celebrates its New Year, a holiday that is celebrated in style in the Asian country. If you want to tell the children more about these special days, share with them chinese folk tales like this one that we propose. Its titled 'Nian, the monster ' and it is a Chinese folk tale that explains to your children why the Chinese New Year is celebrated with noise, firecrackers, dances and a lot of red color.

Long ago, there was a monster named Nian. He loved having a small town in China terrified and visited it once a year to scare its inhabitants. He always visited the village on the first day of the year, to remind the locals that he was still there for another year and that they must remain scared.

The terror that Nian aroused could have lasted forever. However one day, by chance, one of the villagers wore a red robe. When the monster Nian approached him and saw the red robe, he started to flee. The villager was startled when he saw the monster and the metal bucket he was carrying fell down the hill, causing a loud and annoying noise that scared Niam even more. The monster sped away from there.

Returning to the village, the local told all his neighbors about his encounter with the monster and how lucky he had been: his red robe had scared Nian and with the noise of the metal bucket the monster began to flee without looking back.

Knowing how to make the monster stop scaring them, all the villagers spent a whole year preparing. When Nian reappeared the following year, they all went looking for the red flags and rattles that they had been making during the year.

With the noise of the rattles and the waving of the red flags, Nian, the monster, fled in terror and the villagers they never saw him again.

In addition to get a little closer to Chinese cultureThis story can help you know if your child is able to understand the meaning of the words he reads and, what is more complicated, the message that the story conveys. To do this, we propose some reading comprehension questions below. Some of the following statements are true and some are false. Do you dare to do this reading exercise?

  • Nian went to visit a Chinese village several times a year.
  • All the villagers feared the monster Nian.
  • One day, one of the villagers dressed in red and that made the monster very scared.
  • However, when Nian heard the noise, she was unfazed.
  • The villagers found a way to keep the monster from coming back.

And a question for your son ... what was this solution to the problems with Nian?

How much do you know about Chinese culture and the great celebration that is organized in honor of the New Year? Here we tell you some of the funniest curiosities about this holiday so that you can pass them on to your child.

- Why is your New Year not the same as ours?
As you well know, in the West we change the year on our January 1. However, according to the traditional Chinese calendar, the new year begins when we are in late January or early February. And it is that, in addition to celebrating it at a different time of year than we do, its date for this party changes every year.

And how can this be? It is because traditionally, in China they are guided by a calendar according to the moon (while our calendar, which is called the Gregorian calendar, is guided by the sun).

- Each year, corresponds to an animal
The traditional Chinese calendar considers that each year that begins corresponds to an animal. There are 12 animals that celebrate: the rat, the buffalo, the pig (or wild boar), the tiger, the rabbit (cat or hare), the dragon, the horse, the goat, the snake, the monkey, the rooster and the dog.

Thus, for example, the year 2000 was the year of the Dragon; the year 2001, that of the Serpent; 2002, that of the horse ... So until 2020, which is that of the Rat.

And why animals? There are several legends about the origin of this tradition. On the one hand, it is said that these were the guests of a great banquet that the important Jade Emperor celebrated. It is also said that they all participated in a great race, which gave them the position they would occupy in their celebration of the New Year.

This is a great time to find out what animal you are according to the Chinese calendar. Do you already know?

- The celebrations last for many days
We celebrate the New Year from December 31 to January 1, however, the Chinese celebrate this holiday for 15 days. In fact, many families return to their cities of origin, where their relatives live, to spend these days all together. There are big traffic jams on the roads and train and plane tickets have to be booked well in advance!

- Some traditions of these days
In addition to throwing out lots of fireworks and firecrackers (even setting them up as decorative ornaments) and turning everything red, it is traditional in Chinese New Year to thoroughly clean houses. In this way, it is possible to get rid of the evil spirits so that they do not accompany us in the new year. In fact, many leave their windows open for them to escape.

- The red envelope, do not miss
In the Chinese New Year, all the children receive a red envelope (which we already know from the story we have just read that it is a very important color in this celebration since, in addition, it is considered the color of good luck). In this envelope, their parents and other family members give them some money that the children save (or so they should!).

However, today, fewer and fewer children and young people receive an envelope in hand. It is becoming more and more common for their relatives to make a transfer to them through a mobile application. Has the magic been lost a bit?

Even though we live far from China, we can involve children in this fun and colorful celebration. In fact, it is a perfect excuse for the little ones learn more about culture and tradition of this eastern country. But how can we celebrate the Chinese New Year? Here are some ideas!

1. Locate China on the map. Before any celebration, we must take a map (or make our own homemade world map) to know where China really is. For this, we can compare it with our country. Is it bigger or smaller? Is it too far or not that far? Is it further north or south?

2. Go to a parade or exhibition about China. More and more cities are organizing parades and other activities to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Going with the children can be a great idea for them to learn more about the main traditions of these days. The little ones are sure to be very surprised by the great dragons of the processions.

3. Learn some Chinese proverbs
Proverbs are sayings that are passed from generation to generation and that contain bits of wisdom that are very useful for children. Taking advantage of the arrival of the New Year, you can share with your child some of the most popular Chinese popular sayings.

  • You have to climb the mountain as an old man to reach the top as a young man.
  • You cannot guide the wind, but you can change the direction of your sails.
  • If you already know what to do and don't do it, then you are worse off than before.
  • The heart never speaks, but you have to listen to it to understand.

4. Prepare a rich recipe
A wonderful way to celebrate this holiday is by cooking a delicious typical dish in China. Do not miss the recipes that we propose. You will love them!

5. Read more Chinese stories
And there is no better way to celebrate and learn about the Chinese tradition than by reading some popular tales that come directly from the East.

You can read more articles similar to Nian, the monster. Traditional chinese tales, in the category of Children's stories on site.
