Does your child have sensitive skin?

Does your child have sensitive skin?

Care of sensitive skin can be summarized under two items.

1-Limiting chemical effects
2-Moisture protection

CHEMICAL EFFECTS LIMITATION

All chemicals that come into contact with the body must be observed. What should be done to prevent chemical effects?

1-Shampoos should be selected from the most non-allergy type (continuous baby shampoo can be used in children with sensitive skin.) Body shampoo should be preferred instead of soap. Shampoo should not be used in every wash in infants.

2- To wash the clothes, baby detergent or white soap should be used. The laundry should be rinsed twice. Bleach should never be used.

3-Household cleaning materials should be paid attention to, if possible, natural cleaners such as arabic soap should be used.

4-The clothes worn by the baby and the child should be cotton and not chemically treated. Labels should be removed. Synthetic clothing should not be used.

5-Attached accessories should be paid attention. Earrings, watches can cause allergy in these children.

SKIN MOISTURE PROTECTION

Protecting the skin's moisture can be very difficult, especially in winter days when the heaters are on. It is quite difficult for some babies and children to keep their skin moist. What should be done to maintain moisture?

1-Water is the thing that dries the skin the most. It may be useful to wash babies and children with sensitive skin every two to three days instead of every day. (Of course, this may not be very possible on hot summer days.) It is also useful to creme as soon as you leave the bathroom.

2- Moisturizing creams should be considered pure and natural. Effective moisturizers generally have a thick consistency because the amount of lipid contained therein is high. There are many different products on the market. Pure petroleum jelly is also one of the most effective and cheapest solutions. It is important that creams are used frequently. Children who have a very dry skin may need to be used four to five times a day, or even as the skin dries.

Nighttime coughing or choking

Why kids cough at night

If your child coughs or chokes frequently while she's asleep, she may have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that's sometimes caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids (glands in the throat just behind the nose) blocking the upper airway passages during the night, making it difficult to breathe. When your child's throat muscles relax at night, these oversized glands can temporarily prevent air from getting to her lungs. Sleep apnea peaks between the ages of 3 and 6, when tonsils and adenoids are at their largest in comparison to the size of your child's airway.

A cough can also be a symptom of asthma, allergies, a cold, or another illness, especially if it's persistent and painful. Call your child's doctor if her cough makes it difficult for her to breathe, lasts longer than a week, or comes on suddenly (accompanied by a fever) or after your child chokes on something.

What you can do about nighttime coughing or choking

If you think your child has sleep apnea, start by telling her doctor about it. She'll probably need to be observed and treated by a sleep expert, who can then refer you to an ear, nose, and throat specialist to have her tonsils and/or adenoids evaluated to find out if they're what's causing the problem. If so, a relatively simple outpatient operation to remove them usually does the trick.

If your child has a nighttime cough because she's sick, try elevating the head of her bed or giving her a doctor-approved cough medication (also call before giving her an over-the-counter cough remedy). Giving your child extra fluids and running a humidifier while she sleeps may also help. If the cough persists – a potential sign of asthma – have your child evaluated by her regular doctor or an asthma specialist.
