Children with cancer have hope

Researchers have discovered a strain of cancer in dogs that could lead to new treatments for bone cancer in children, according to a study in Edinburgh, reports BBC News.
This strain makes copies of the disease, allowing it to spread throughout the body. It seems that the cell in question is resistant to any kind of treatment. If researchers can identify it, finding a treatment will be much more possible.
Osteosarcoma in dogs is molecularly similar to bone cancer in children. It is also the most common form of tumor in young people and more than 80% risk losing a limb.
The researchers say that the answer would be this strain they identified growing cells in harsh conditions, and while the other cancer cells died, it was able to survive.
Osteosarcoma occurs more frequently in older children and adolescents, usually boys, and very rarely in children under 5 years. The causes are unknown, but specialists believe that those children who have hereditary retinoblastoma - a rare tumor of the eyes - are at increased risk.
Experts say that this study is important, but for the data to be relevant, they must be demonstrated on humans, not just dogs.

When it is time to sleep we find a very common situation in some babies: the child curls up in the arms of his mother and little by little he falls asleep peacefully.

After a while, the mother tries to put the baby in his crib with great care so as not to wake him up, but suddenly he wakes up screaming, crying and demanding attention. What happens is a natural reaction called: the “spiked cradle syndrome”. We tell you why it happens and what we can do.

The baby after spending 9 months in the mother's womb, feeling the heartbeat, being gently rocked by the constant rocking, and accustomed to the mother's smell that make him feel protected and safe; suddenly, it is born and experiences very important changes. Many babies need to continue to feel this protection, and while many parents hope their babies will settle for their quiet and still crib, the little ones will not accept it.

Many parents wonder if the baby has a radar or something similar that alerts them when they are being placed on the mattress of their crib and what makes them wake up immediately like a spring. Well yes, they do. There are two phases when sleeping:

- REM phase: It is a short and deep sleep phase.

- Non-REM phase: Babies spend almost all of their hours asleep in this phase. It has a survival function, since it is a superficial sleep phase that allows the baby to react to any unpleasant or potentially dangerous changes.

If your baby has spiked crib syndrome and every time we try to leave him in his crib he cries and screams, it helps a lot not to despair and empathize with them. Once we are calm and internalize that the child is healthy and his behavior is the result of a survival mechanism, we can find some alternatives to help us:

- Choose a doll that you like. There are babies who are attached to a stuffed animal, a cloth, a blanket or a doll that they carry everywhere.

- Co-sleeping. Sleeping with the baby in the same bed or in a crib attached to it will make the child feel safe. But be careful, you have to do it correctly.

- The atmosphere of the room. It is recommended that the room is ventilated before putting the child there. Also, it is important that the temperature is neither too high nor too low. Twenty degrees is the most convenient. We must emphasize a pleasant decoration for the little one and the color of the room, with pastel tones being recommended.

- Ambient sound. Many babies fall asleep to the sound of a vacuum cleaner, a dryer, etc. This isolates children from other types of noises that can wake them up.

- Use relaxing music. Using slow songs, classical music or lullabies are a good option for the baby to relax and get to sleep.

- Use muslin. Wrapping your child in muslin before putting him in his crib can help. The effect of wrapping it in a soft and comfortable fabric transmits security and comfort.

Typical names for boys in Mexico that you will like because of its diminutive

The great search for the ideal name for your child should always be a moment full of magic, which awakens the interest of both parents to find that name that may be traditional or unique, but that has a special touch that makes both their skin crawl. And there's no better way to get that feeling than by splashing a little bit of the energy of cute and beloved Mexico. To help you in your search, in we propose some names for boys that are very popular in Mexico. You will like them all because of the very affectionate diminutive that corresponds to them.

In Mexico, there is no specific tradition for boys' names, unlike the case of girls, which seeks to focus on their beautiful and delicate nature. But there are some customs that are also characteristic of other countries, such as, for example, placing the name of the father, grandfather or a special saint.

Next we will show you the most popular names for boys in Mexico, with their own diminutives:

1. Fernando: Fer or Nando
This is one of the most attractive names for boys in Mexico. Its origin goes back to the Germanic ‘Firthunands’, which means ‘He who risks everything for peace’. Many parents choose it because it is a name with a lot of tradition but that continues to be on everyone's lips.

2. Guadalupe: Lupe / Lupillo
Although it is mostly used as a name for girls, the origin of Guadalupe is actually masculine, since that was the name of the Indian who discovered the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Mexican origin of this name is Náhualt ‘Coatlallope’ and it means ‘He who crushes serpents’.

3. Michelangelo: Migue
What do you think of this popular name combination? In my opinion it is a very attractive and powerful choice. Miguel comes from the Hebrew ‘Mikael’ which means ‘Who is like God?’, While Angel comes from the Greek and is the representation for ‘He who announces a message’. One of the most used diminutives for this name is Migue, although there are those who prefer Angie.

4. Martín: Martinsito
Its origin is Latin and refers to "Those consecrated on Mars", a name with great force that was given to warriors and men of honor, by the God Mars. Without a doubt, Martín is a short and attractive name for boys.

5. Mateo: Mati or Mat
It is a masculine proper noun, whose origin is Hebrew but was later transliterated into Aramaic ‘Matiyah’. Although the name of Mateo also has a Latin origin like ‘Matthaeus’ and means ‘The gift of Yaveh’.

6. Augustine: Agus
A name for boys that sounds very sweet to the ears, but with a powerful meaning that gives that special touch to bristle the parents' skin. It comes from the Latin ‘Augustinus’ and means ‘He who is revered’. As a diminutive, Agus is often used.

We continue this small guide of Mexican names with other ideas that are somewhat more innovative, despite the fact that they are still very popular in the country. Knowing the meaning and origin of the names will help you decide on one of them.

7. Aaron: Aaroncito
It is said that this name for boys is one of those with the most history and tradition in the world. It has two possible origins, from the Hebrew 'Ahărōn' which means 'The progenitor of martyrs' and from the Egyptian 'Aha Rw' which means 'The enlightened one'.

8. Enmanuel: Enma or Manu
An original and attractive name for boys, whose origin comes from the Hebrew Immanu-El, a masculine name that means "God is with us." Does this name with a religious connotation inspire you?

9. Joaquin: Joaco
A typical name for boys in Mexico, although its origin dates back to the Hebrew ‘Yeho ya qim’ and means ‘Yahweh will build’. A very interesting fact about the history of this name is that this is how the father of the Virgin Mary and grandfather of Jesus was called.

10. Ignacio: Nacho or Nachito
Another of the most popular names for boys in Mexico. Its origin, like that of very few names, is in fact Spanish and is a proper masculine given name, although its feminine variant is Ignacia. Although there is a Latin variant 'Ignatius' which means 'Who has fire'.

11. Sebastian: Sebas
A name of masculine inspiration that despite being popular never loses its originality, much less its appeal. It has two origins, from the Hebrew which means 'He to honor' or 'He to revere' and from the Greek 'Sebastos' which means 'The one worthy of respect'.

Are you attracted to the Mexican flavor of children's names? Then one of these diminutive name options is the one for you.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens with a flashback to the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. There is also news footage of the world in chaos after a human-made simian flu virus wipes out most of the world's human population.

Ten years later Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his band of genetically modified super apes have multiplied into hundreds. They have created an ape city where they live together in a self-governed and harmonious society. The apes have had no contact with humans since their escape into the wilderness, but this changes when a small group of humans, led by Malcolm (Jason Clarke), comes across the apes while searching for an abandoned hydroelectric dam.

Malcolm and his team belong to a colony of human survivors in the ruins of San Francisco. They want to reactivate the hydroelectric dam to supply the colony with power. When a trigger-happy human shoots one of Caesar's apes, Caesar orders the humans to leave. To make sure the humans understand, Caesar marches an army of mounted apes to San Francisco, giving the humans an ultimatum - stay away from ape territory or there will be war.

Dreyfus (Gary Oldman), the leader of the colonists, sends Malcolm and some other humans to compromise with Caesar. But there is an ape, Koba (Toby Kebbell), who was tortured and experimented on by humans. He wants his revenge and plots to overthrow Caesar. This results in Caesar's near-death and an all-out war between the apes and humans.

Human extinction; viral plagues; experiments on animals

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes contains action violence, including violence against animals and destruction of property. For example:

  • Apes run through a forest chasing a herd of elks. One ape is about to stab a fallen elk when a massive grizzly bear charges out of the forest and attacks the ape, leaving him with bloody claw slashes across his torso and upper arm. Several apes attack the bear, which is eventually speared.
  • While walking through a forest a man stumbles upon two large apes. He shoots one of the apes in the shoulder. The ape falls to the ground with blood on his shoulder, and another ape signs that the humans shot his son. The man is suddenly surrounded by dozens of threatening apes and the leader of the apes roars at the man, telling him to go.
  • Hundreds of apes, many mounted on horses, march into the ruins of a city occupied by human colonists and deliver an ultimatum - 'Do not come into our country or we will go to war'. Later a human says, 'They're animals, they're not men! We're going to kill every last one of them!'
  • Several apes drag a man along the ground then push his face into the ground.
  • An ape stands over a man lying on the ground, holding a shotgun above his head as if he is about to smash it down on the man's head. The ape changes his mind and throws the gun into a lake.
  • An ape deliberately sets fire to a wooden ape city, and the fire spreads to engulf the entire city. The same ape shoots a second ape, who falls from a tree on to the ground. He is later seen alive but with a bloody bullet wound to his chest.
  • While standing in front of two men an ape picks up a gun and begins to play with it. The ape turns the gun on the two men and shoots them in cold blood. There is a sinister smile on the ape's face after he shoots the men.
  • Two scenes show prolonged fights between two apes during which they brutally pummel each other in the head and body and slam each other's heads into the ground. One fight takes place on a bridge tower, and the two apes crash through steel girders as they attack each other. One ape is left hanging by one arm from a steel girder. The other ape grabs hold of the hanging ape's hand and then deliberately lets go. The ape falls to his death, smashing through several steel girders.
  • In a prolonged chaotic and destructive battle scene, hundreds of apes wielding automatic rifles ride into a human town and attack the humans. The humans retaliate with automatic weapons and grenade launchers. Gunfire kills many apes, horses and humans. Explosions erupt in all directions, causing massive property damage. Apes drag a screaming man from beneath a car and beat him to death. The scene contains some images of blood and gore, including a dead man with a blood-covered face.
  • Apes herd humans into a stockade. One man is dragged by his foot while a woman is carried slung over the shoulder of an ape.

Content that may disturb children

Under 5

In addition to the violent scenes mentioned above, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has some scenes that could scare or disturb children under five years. For example:

  • The apes are likely to be scary for this age group. They are human-sized and walk upright with white war paint on their faces and torsos. Many of them are menacing, and some have large fang-like teeth that show when they roar.
  • Koba has scars on his face and body and one ugly blind eye. He tells another ape that his scars are the result of being tortured and experimented on by humans.

From 5-8

In addition to the violent scenes and scary visual images mentioned above, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has some scenes that could scare or disturb children in this age group.

For example, at the beginning of the movie, we're told that a simian flu virus was responsible for killing 50 million humans. Only one in 500 people survived. There are images of a sick feverish human. We hear that children were left without parents.

From 8-13

Children in this age group are also likely to be disturbed by the violent and disturbing scenes mentioned above.

Over 13

Younger children in this age group might also be disturbed by some of the scenes mentioned above.

Sexual references

None of concern

Alcohol, drugs and other substances

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes shows some use of substances. For example:

  • A man smokes a cigarette in a couple of scenes.
  • Two men drink whisky and one says, 'This is the good stuff'. They offer the whisky to an ape, who drinks it from the bottle and then spits it out.

Nudity and sexual activity

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes shows some nudity and sexual activity. For example:

  • A man and women kiss briefly in a couple of scenes.
  • A couple of scenes show a male and female ape hugging each other.
  • A female ape gives birth - we see the newborn ape but not the actual birth.

Product placement

The following products are displayed or used in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes:

  • older electronic devices including an iPad and Canon video camera
  • Johnny Walker whisky.

Coarse language

There is some coarse language in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Ideas to discuss with your children

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is darker and more intense than Rise of the Planet of the Apes, its prequel. There is more violence, particularly gun violence. Character development is more detailed, particularly for the apes.

The movie is thought-provoking and disturbing in parts, with some violent and scary scenes that make it unsuitable for children under 13 years. Parental guidance could be helpful for slightly older children who are allowed to see the movie.

The main messages from this movie are about tolerance and acceptance of difference, with an emphasis on the fundamental similarities between humans and apes. You could talk with your children about the implications of this message for our relationships with primates.

You could also talk about how a single bad experience can affect an individual's entire life (whether they're human or animal), leaving emotional and physical scars. For example, Koba's desire for revenge comes from being experimented on by humans and leads to his ultimate destruction.
