What do the symbols and markings on the toys indicate?

Anyone who enters a home with a child will quickly find out how many toys they can find around. And no wonder, toys are the objects most often used for children to play. Different types of mascots, dolls, blocks, cars are just some of them. The challenge is to organize them and find the right storage space. But the real problem arises when a toy needs to be bought. Choosing the right one depends on many factors, color, functionality, interests of the child, but also safety.

What toys are safe?

Unfortunately, the safety of toys is getting worse, especially today when we are overwhelmed cheap and cheesy toys from China. Therefore, it remains for parents to check whether the toy will be safe for the child. First of all, keep it be careful and remember that in a toy store it may seem to us without reservations, and after unpacking it at home it will bitterly disappoint us. So if you're not sure about the safety of the toy, it's worth taking a look markings, attestations and certificateswhich can be found on the label, packaging and sometimes on the toy itself. What do they mean

CE - this mark indicates that the product has been manufactured in accordance with European standards. It must be on the toy if it is to be approved for sale. A toy with this mark has undergone an appropriate assessment of compliance with the relevant European Union directive on toys. The symbol should be placed in a visible place so that the buyer has no problem finding it. Unfortunately, it happens that manufacturers often counterfeit this symbol, so let's pay attention to whether the marking is at least 5 mm high and whether it contains the distance between the letters.

0+ - it is information that is supposed to make parents aware of what age the toy is intended so that playing with it does not pose any danger.

IN - this certificate proves that the toy meets the legal requirements of the European Union

TUV - is a very important certificate that is given by laboratories and organizations confirming that the toy is made of safe substances that do not threaten the child's life and health.

EN71 - is another mark indicating that the toy has met the safety requirements. This sign should include all toys available in the European Union. You can also find the EN71 marking with the numbers 1, 2, 3, which have the appropriate meaning. EN71-1 is responsible for the physical and mechanical quality of toys for children under 14 months of age. EN71-2 testifies that the toy has been tested for flammability. In contrast, EN71-3 specifies the requirements that a toy must meet in terms of volatilization and chemical reactions, e.g. when in contact with the child's saliva.

FSC - this marking can be found on wooden toys and informs the buyer that the wood used for the production of the toy comes from forests where the environment is being protected.

PEFC - this symbol guarantees that the toy is safe and has been adapted to all ecological, social and economic standards during its production.

GOTS - means that the toy has organic cotton and no chemicals have been used to cultivate it.

Fair trade - is a sign that tells us that children are not employed in the production of toys, but people who work honestly and get paid for it.

Safe Toys - proves the safety of the toy both in relation to the child's age and taking into account the materials used for its production.

Positive opinion of PZH and the Institute of Mother and Child it is information that the toy has been subjected to appropriate tests carried out by specialists, which makes it safe for the child. At least that's how it should be. Sometimes positive feedback and recommendations receive toys and products that can raise concerns. More on this topic.

Öko-Tex Standard 100 is a certificate appearing on material products, e.g. mascots, and its presence indicates that the material has no carcinogenic, allergenic or nitrogenous dyes. It also does not contain harmful chemical compounds and heavy metals.

Safe for the child - is a certificate confirming the safety of the subject. A toy with this symbol should: be made of raw materials properly selected for the child's age and intended use, not contain harmful chemical substances as well as ensure safety and functionality.
