Parents say: Halloween festivities perfect for babies

Parents say: Halloween festivities perfect for babies

Your baby's too young to go trick-or-treating, but you can still have fun on Halloween. Read on for creative ideas from other our site parents with babies up to a year old. (You can also check out Halloween ideas for toddlers.)

Throw a party at home

"Since my 7-month-old is a little young to get into Halloween, we're having a small family gathering at our home with Halloween decorations and snacks. My son will be decked out in his first costume to help answer the door for trick-or-treaters, and the family will get to share in the excitement of his reaction to the neighborhood kids out in their Halloween best. We've invited grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. Most of their kids are too old for trick-or-treating now, and the few with little ones will be able to trick-or-treat in our neighborhood. I've decorated our house, inside and out, with flashing orange lights and ghosts that fly in the wind – they really catch my son's attention!"
— Andrea

Spread some Halloween cheer

"The members of my mom group are going to trick-or-treat at an assisted living residence on Halloween. Although my son will be only 8 months old, I think it's important for him to be exposed to new and different people. Taking him to visit the older residents will not only bring them happiness, it'll expose him to new sights and sounds. It's never too early to start community service!"
— Lory

Go to a zoo party

"My son will be 6 months old at Halloween. We're going to take him to the local zoo – they let the older kids trick-or-treat while the younger ones enjoy the animals. The whole zoo is decorated and all the employees dress up."
— Lainie

Look for local children's festivals

"Every year for Halloween our church has a fun, kid-focused evening they call Festival of the Lights. We plan to dress up our 7-month-old and take her there so she can enjoy the other costumes and have her picture taken."
— Amy

Visit friends or relatives

"My 7-month-old is way too young to care about Halloween, but we're going to have fun with it anyway. We bought him an elephant costume, and we'll take him to visit family and friends. This way, we can show him off to our family and friends, and our baby can enjoy seeing everyone too."
— Dacia

Pass out candy

"My daughter will be just shy of 9 months on Halloween. We're going to dress her up in a bumblebee costume, and she'll help us greet the trick-or-treaters that come by our house. Since she's too young for trick-or-treating herself, we'll take tons of pictures and maybe go strolling around the neighborhood to watch the other children."
— Debbie

"My son is 7 months, and he's going to split his night between trick-or-treating with his big sister and older cousins and helping Daddy hand out candy. Since we're new to the neighborhood, this will be a great opportunity to meet our neighbors. He's too young to eat candy, but he's not too young to enjoy a nice stroller ride in his scarecrow costume! He loves the house decorations we have up – especially the lamppost we turned into a ghost and the stuffed monster that sings 'Monster Mash' while dancing around."
— Anonymous

Make a Halloween keepsake

"My older daughter and I made a paper pumpkin for each member of the family, including her 4-month-old baby brother. We put our names on them and taped them to our front door. I plan to keep them as memories of my son's first Halloween and how his big sister helped him celebrate. Later we'll laminate them and put them in his scrapbook."
— Maureen

Dress up during the day

"I'll be dressing my 10-month-old in an inexpensive duck costume and taking her to Daddy's work for lunch. We'll be able to show her off but not overwhelm her with the normal Halloween festivities. It should be fun and we're looking forward to it! Can't wait to see the pictures!"
— Jill

Have your little goblin's portrait taken

"My daughter will be exactly 3 months old on Halloween. I bought her the most adorable costume, and we're going to have her picture taken that day and pass out candy that night. She'll be an extra treat for our trick-or-treaters!"
— Letitia

"I have 3-month-old twin boys. We're planning to dress them up as baby lions and take them to visit their grandparents. We'll also have a professional photograph taken of our two little lions."
— twinsma

Surprise the grandparents

"My son is only 9 months old and still too young to participate in most Halloween festivities, so we're planning to surprise both sets of grandparents by going to their houses and trick-or-treating. They have no idea that we'll be visiting them, nor do they know what his costume will be. Needless to say, they'll be very surprised!"
— Stacie

Try the library

"Check out your local library. We've lived in three different states and in each one, during their normal story time during the week of Halloween, they have the kids come in costumes and have a costume parade around the library as well as other fun activities – especially great for those too young to trick-or-treat."
— Anonymous

Do it for charity

"We've decided to go trick-or-treating for the fun of it, but instead of collecting treats for our baby, we'll collect change for UNICEF. The website tells how to do it. Never too early to do good deeds together as a family, right?"
— Venta

Facts and myths about children's sleep

Make a snowman that shreds

It may not be snowing where I live, but we're making our own snow with shredded paper. We're glittering our picture with shredded paper, creating a fun and festive winter snowman.

  • shredded paper, right from your electronic paper shredder. Or you can create your own shredded paper with scissors or a paper trimmer.
  • 1 sheet of colored paper
  • pencil
  • school glue or tacky glue
  • paint brush - optional
  • googly eyes, pom poms
  • colored paper scraps

1. With your pencil, draw three large circles on your paper, right in a line like a snowman.

2. Add glue to each of the three circles, I used a paint brush to help get it evenly distributed. I also suggest doing one circle at a time, so your glue doesn't dry out before you get to the last circle.

3. Spread shredded paper onto your glued circles. My shreds are 1-2 inches long, so I had to scrunch and bend some of them to stay within the outline. Press the paper shreds down, making sure they are in place and then shake off any extra paper that didn't stick into the box. Continue this with all three of you circles.

4. Glue on your googly eyes, black pom poms for buttons, and cut and glue any paper embellishments you'd like to add. We make a hat, arms, mouth, and nose.

Now it's ready for display. Mr. Snowman never looked so festive and fluffy!

Urinal or adapter to remove your baby's diaper

One of the most difficult moments in a child's development is removing the diaper. That the child learn to pee in the toilet is a complicated task that requires time, dedication and, above all, choosing the right moment with all the resources at hand. The question that many parents ask themselves today is whether the classic potty or the toilet adapter will be better to teach their child to pee alone.

Most of us learned to pee on a potty and we remember fondly and imaginatively those scenes from our first contact with the potty. Our first steps towards a more independent life are linked to fun urinals. Yet times change to make life easier to parents and babies. The choice between a potty and an adapter to teach your child to pee is easy.

Choose the potty always implies a double learning on the part of the child, with the consequent double effort for parents and children. Keep in mind that you will first have to teach the child to pee on the potty, and then repeat the process on the toilet itself. A difficult learning step that is avoided if you choose the first option adapter.

Although the adapter is not the first step you should take to teach your child to pee alone. Before you start to seat him on the adapter, before explaining the need to pee in the toilet, you could change the disposable diapers for cloth ones. Thus the child would notice the unpleasant sensation of being wet, something that does not happen with the most absorbent diapers.

Remember that you will not be able to remove your child's diapers from one day to the next, the process will take a while and you should not rush, since not all children are ready to pee in the bathroom at the same age. Remember also that children are great imitators, so it would not be bad for them to see how you pee in the bathroom with practical examples.

Once the children have the adapter It is possible that they use it many times, but other times incidents occur. Don't be put off by those steps backwards or get angry. Explain to the child how happy you are all when he uses the adapter, but you don't have to scold him when he forgets.

In any case, the fundamental premise when removing the child's diaper is Do not press. Slowly, patiently and in a good mood, because your child will learn to pee in the bathroom at the right time.

Amniocentesis, description of the procedure of Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis, description of the procedure of Amniocentesis

The risks of Amniocentesis

To reduce the risk of spontaneous abortion or intrauterine infection, it is necessary that the amniocentesis be performed in the following conditions:

  1. The experience of the obstetrician, at least 50 amniocenteses per year;
  1. Modern medical equipment, high performance ultrasound (amniocentesis is performed under ultrasound guidance, to avoid embryo damage or mechanical complications such as perforation)

Specialized counseling before Amniocentesis

amniocentesis It is recommended primarily by the specialist obstetrician or geneticist, but it can also be considered a personal decision of pregnancy.

If this person refuses to do the investigation, other methods of prenatal diagnosis can be used (within the limits of the current availability).
However, amniocentesis is the paraclinical investigation with the highest specificity and sensitivity for the diagnosis of most genetic syndromes.
Between weeks 12-16 of pregnancy the triple test and the ultrasound routine with the endovaginal probe are performed. If the obstetrician identifies certain changes (markers), possible syndromes or genetic disorders, he may recommend performing an amniocentesis and a specialized genetic consultation.

How is amniocentesis performed?

Amniocentesis is an invasive diagnostic method. Amniocentesis is performed under ultrasound guidance, so before carrying out such an investigation, an ultrasound is always made that establishes the size and current position of the fetus.
The pregnant woman should be relaxed, and sit on a bed next to the ultrasound. After the obstetrician locates the exact position of the fetus and placenta, it establishes the ideal place for the amniotic puncture.
Local skin disinfection is performed, after which the doctor introduces a long needle through the skin and the abdominal wall to the amniotic cavity where it extracts several milliliters of amniotic fluid.
The obstetrician should be careful not to injure the fetus or placenta, as this may lead to certain complications (miscarriage).
The maneuver itself does not last more than 30 seconds, is slightly painful and in most cases does not lead to major complications. The extracted amniotic fluid will be replaced with an equal amount, in the next minutes-hours, by utero-fetal homeostasis (fetus swallows and excretes the amniotic fluid continuously).
Most pregnant women who are subjected to amniocentesis say that the discomfort due to maneuvering is minimal, while other women experience abdominal cramps of varying intensity. Some pregnant women prefer local anesthesia with xylin, but others say that a single sting is enough!
The future mother should not be worried that the fetus could be damaged with the needle being introduced into the amniotic cavity, firstly because the maneuver is performed under ultrasound guidance, the doctor always having in front of the eyes the position of the fetus and secondly, to know that it has a very effective reflex defense mechanism, moving when it is mechanically injured.
The obstetrician can monitor the beats of the fetal heart for several minutes or hours after amniocentesis, thus identifying any possible complications that may occur.

Complications in Amniocentesis

Most pregnant women who perform amniocentesis do not have any accusations or complications. Some, however, have cramps or abdominal discomfort within the first 24-48 hours after the investigation.
Only 1-2% of pregnant women will experience more severe symptoms such as:

  • High intensity abdominal cramps
  • pathological vaginal discharge-spotting (blood)
  • amniotic fluid loss
Any pregnant woman who has one or more of these symptoms must present urgently to the gynecologist-obstetrician doctor, as there is an imminent danger of losing pregnancy (miscarriage).
  • Attention in case of HR incompatibility

All pregnant women who have Rh negative blood must be immunized after amniocentesis with specific immunoglobulins so as to prophylaxis hemolytic anemia of incompatibility in the fetus.
This is true of all the invasive maneuvers that the future mother endures throughout the pregnancy, because there is the possibility of mixing the 2 different blood groups with Rh incompatible.
Exceptions from immunization are garvid whose partners (daddy) have Rh negative, thus excluding the possibility of anemia in the newborn!
Only children born to mothers with Rh negative and father with Rh positive (and thus with a 50% chance of having a Rh positive, incompatible with meme), can develop anemia and jaundice at birth.

    The results of Amniocentesis

After collecting the amniotic fluid, it will be processed and analyzed in a specialized laboratory for genetic and molecular analysis. Data processing and results processing can take several days (up to 10-14 days).
Measurement of alpha-fetoprotein (protein secreted in large amounts in pregnancy and certain tumors) in the amniotic fluid has a rather high diagnostic significance because it can signal the presence of neural tube abnormalities such as spina bifida or anencephaly (severe congenital malformations of the central nervous system).
The amniotic fluid also contains fetal cells, which can be harvested and cultured on special media (multiplied), which can then be analyzed by a genetic specialist. Thus, a series of chromosomal abnormalities can be identified that are the basis of serious, uncorrectable and incurable congenital malformations.

Amniocentesis versus velocity biopsy in prenatal diagnosis

Biopsy from the chorionic villi is performed faster than amniocentesis (between weeks 10-12 of pregnancy) and was considered until recently to have a higher risk of miscarriage.
Subsequent studies have denied this. Chorionic villi biopsy is an invasive method that consists of analyzing fetal cells extracted by the transcervical pathway from pregnancy.
The advantage of the method is that it offers the fast obtaining of information about the fetus, from the first trimester of pregnancy, thus reducing the emotional stress of the woman and offering the possibility of an early therapeutic abortion in case certain chromosomal abnormalities are identified. The disadvantage of the method is that it does not offer the chance to correctly evaluate alpha-fetoprotein.
Amniocentesis is performed instead in the second trimester of pregnancy (weeks 15-18 of pregnancy) and is also an invasive investigation that increases the risk of miscarriage by 0.5-1%. This investigation can identify most of the chromosomal abnormalities that underlie serious genetic syndromes.
Amniocentesis is not performed routinely (as is the biopsy of chorionic villi, which is even rarer) and is recommended only among pregnant women at high risk to give birth to a child with a genetic condition and who has changes in the triple test performed previously. .

What the baby learns at two years

What the baby learns at two years

The curiosity and independence they are two of the main characteristics of two-year-olds. At this stage, children become active explorers of their environment, since when autonomy takes its toll on them, want to do activities on their own, and they will achieve it thanks to their persistence and their desire to discover the world. Here is a summary of all the skills and abilities that children can acquire at two years of age.

It must be borne in mind that within the evolutionary development, we have to mention the different areas that make it up: sensory-motor, cognitive, language and social / emotional affective area. Based on these areas of development, in early childhood education the different learning areas dividing it as follows:

    • Self-knowledge and personal autonomy
    • Knowledge of the environment
    • Communication and representation

Here are some of the things children learn at two years of age within these learning areas:

    - Children of two years they learn to recognize their own image and that of others. Identify the parts of the face, such as the eyes, nose, and mouth, and of the body, such as the head, arms, hands, legs, among others and to point and name them through fun games. They also begin to identify themselves sexually, they already know if they are boys or girls.

    - It is a stage in which at the motor level his movements are still very rough, and they have barely acquired the manual clamp, but it is a good time to start working on fine motor skills.

    - They learn habits of Healthy lifesuch as washing hands, resting after each activity, eating habits such as spooning, eating solids, and chewing.

    - If there is something that marks the time of the two years, this is for the toilet training.

    - Their game is becoming more elaborate, they begin to accept and understand their rules, to share toys, to move around in order. And to say hello and goodbye, as well as listen to colleagues.

    - Although its spatio-temporal conception is still very poor, it does begin to acquire some basic spatial notions related to one's own body, objects and actions, day - night, as well as the passing of the seasons.

    - With one year we started learning primary colors, because little by little we will introduce more colors to those already learned, red, blue, yellow and green.

    - They already understand logical series of two elements and an attribute, such as shape, discriminate and compare objects according to their shape, size and color. We develop the logical thinking, visual attention and relationship skills.

    - And in language there is a great verbal explosion, much earlier in girls than in boys, acquiring good pronunciation, intonation and structuring of simple sentences. They understand how a conversation works, learning to wait their turns, to listen and look at others.

As you can see is a stage very rich in acquisitions and learning for childrenThat is why I will provide adequate and rich stimuli, they will guarantee a correct development of children in this great stage of their life.

At two years of age, children are ready to become interested in books and stories. Reading stories, told by their parents or caregivers, is a good resource for them to begin to understand some values. Therefore, we have put together some short stories suitable for children of those ages.
