75 UNIQUE BABY GIRL NAMES FOR 2020 - Names and Meanings!
Neurofibromatosis is a genetic neuroectodermal disease, characterized by the appearance of abnormalities in the skin, nervous system, bones and endocrine glands. Children suffering from this disease show their first symptoms at the age of five at the latest. The genetic abnormality produces benign tumors that can develop in any organ and pigmented spots (coffee-have-milk) on the skin.
Types of neurofibromatosis
The disease manifests itself in two forms:
- classical neurofibromatosis (NF1), also called Recklinhausen's disease;
- central or acoustic neurofibromatosis (NF2).
Depending on the severity of the symptoms, the easiest form of the disease is NF1, many of the affected children being able to lead relatively normal lives.
In other cases, however, learning difficulties and attention deficit may occur. The stature may be lower than the average, and macrocephaly (disproportionate elongation and development of the skull) is often encountered.
Symptoms of neurofibromatosis
Symptoms used to diagnose the disease include:
- cafe-au-lait spots (at least six) in children under 10 years old;
- neurofribroomas (benign tumors of nerve tissues);
- tumors in the optic nerve;
- typical anomalies of long bones.
Mental retardation may be encountered in some children suffering from this genetic disorder, but the list of anomalies is much longer. Early puberty may be another effect of the development of benign tumors.
The cardiovascular system is affected by hypertension, but in some cases congenital heart defects, regressive cardiomyopathy, with high risk of myocardial infarction may be encountered.
Normal development of muscles and skeleton can be severely affected by Neurofibromatosis. Common complications include: kyphoscoliosis (spinal deformity that takes the form of the letter S), thick legs, chest deformities and congenital pseudoarthrosis (manifested by enlargement of the tibia and thinning of the long bones).
Benign tumors that affect the endocrine glands can lead to early development, gigantism, but also to hypertrophy of the genital or infertility organs.
Manifestations of the disease in the nervous system can lead to mental retardation, behavioral changes and hypertensive attacks.
At the skin level, coffee-to-milk stains may be accompanied by axillary freckles and frostbite and urticaria pigmentosa, a rash caused by collecting mast cells in the skin.
The disease evolves over time, and the number of benign tumors can increase, especially in the skin. Adolescence and pregnancy can intensify the symptoms and complications.
Neurofibromatosis can impede the normal development of the child, but it can also have serious aesthetic and psychological consequences on the sick children. In some cases, the pain caused by tumors can significantly decrease the quality of life.
The more serious form of the disease, NF2, is associated with larger problems during child development. These may require surgery and even amputations of the affected limbs.
Life expectancy is shorter by 15 years than healthy children, and the most common complications that can lead to death are hypertension and cancer.
Surgery is the recommended treatment for the elimination of tumors that can become malignant, especially after adolescence. Early detection of benign tumors developed in the nervous system is particularly important for quality of life.
Physiotherapy and limb severity with severe bone defects can lead to an improvement in symptoms. The drug treatment is used to alleviate other complications caused by benign tumors.
The parent suffering from this disease has a 50% chance of transmitting the genetic disease to the children. Prenatal diagnosis has a higher success rate when the affected parent is the only member of his or her family suffering from Neurofibromastosis.
The genetic mutations associated with the disease continue to be research in the hope of identifying the gene that causes this disease, present on chromosome 22.
