Preschool reform to the bin?

Rzeczpospolita reports that there will be no subsidies from the budget to kindergartens announced by the Prime Minister and the Minister of National Education this year. It was planned to reduce nursery fees from September and improve the accessibility of these facilities for working parents. Unfortunately, everything indicates that this will not work. According to Rzeczpospolita, the decision was made on March 5. However, the government has not informed citizens or local governments about changes in plans so far. Instead, he would decide to draft a new law.

What was planned? This year, which was talked about many times, local governments were to receive PLN 320 million to finance the reform. The money was to gradually reduce fees for additional hours in kindergarten (exceeding 5 hours).

Why is this not going to work? The plans were to be changed due to the Minister of Finance and "lack of funds". The government is to introduce changes not on September 1, 2013 but on September 1, 2014. However, will this date be binding?

Two by Two

Two by Two

Story

Two by Two tells the biblical flood story from an animal perspective. Lion (voice of Alan Stanford), the King of the Jungle, brings the animals together and tells them that a flood is about to destroy the world. Lion says that a kind man named Noah has built an ark and that the animals must all check whether they're registered on the list of animals to be saved.

Dave (voice of Dermot Magennis) and his son Finny (voice of Callum Maloney) are loveable and adaptable creatures called nestrians, who discover they're not on the list. Desperate to save his son, Dave disguises them both as grymps so they can sneak on board. They're housed with real grymps, mother Hazel (voice of Tara Flynn) and daughter Leah (voice of Ava Connolly), who are nasty and unfriendly. Leah and Finny go off to explore, but a huge wave hits and they discover they're on the wharf. They desperately try to get back on the ark but they can't.

Finny and Leah race against time to reach higher ground before they're engulfed by water. Along the way they meet a giant slug called Obesey and a parasite called Stayput, whom they help to reach higher ground. They're threatened by flying creatures called griffins, who want to eat them. Meanwhile on the ark, Dave and Hazel must work together to save their children.

Themes

The end of the world; predatory behaviour

Violence

Two by Two has some violence. For example:

  • Lion says that carnivores aren't allowed to eat herbivores, so a leopard throws down a creature it was about to eat.
  • A gorilla grabs Hazel by the throat and says she'd better leave before things get ugly. She says he's already ugly.
  • Hazel grabs Dave by the throat and says, 'We don't save lives - we take them'.
  • Leah and Finny are about to fall in the water when they're grabbed by the griffins, who are scary flying creatures. The griffins get ready to eat Leah and Finny, but Finny blows blue gas over one griffin and Leah bites the other. They both fall to the ground.
  • Hazel imagines a computer game where she fights her way up to Lion, punching the gorillas on her way.
  • Hazel attacks Lion with a pole and knocks him unconscious.
  • The griffins are scary creatures who are always trying to catch and eat Leah and Finny. They swoop at them many times.
  • Lion swipes Dave away with his paw and grabs Hazel by the throat.
  • Obesey turns into a whale and eats the Griffins.

Content that may disturb children

Under 5
In addition to the violent scenes mentioned above, Two by Two has some scenes that could scare or disturb children under five years. For example:

  • Lion can be scary at times, especially when he gets angry.
  • The gorillas are large, scary, angry and violent. They're the guards on the ark.
  • A tiger pulls a creature out of his mouth when he's told he can't eat it.
  • Hazel is a scary cat-like creature with green eyes. She can broaden her shoulders to look quite evil.
  • The flood comes with thunder and lightning. When it hits the ark, the ark rises.
  • Finny and Leah run from the ever-rising flood. It's scary.
  • The griffins are large flying creatures with nasty, evil laughs.
  • A scene shows Lion unconscious and flat on the ground.
  • The ark reaches an iceberg. Finny falls off and slips into the water. Dave dives in after him as do Hazel and Leah. Finny looks as if he is dead.

From 5-8
In addition to the violent scenes and scary visual images mentioned above, Two by Two has some scenes that could scare or disturb children in this age group. For example:

  • When it's their turn to be registered, Dave and Finny discover they're not on the saved list. Dave begs to be included. Dave blows blue gas, which is what nestrians do when they're scared. Dave and Finny feel like outcasts who don't belong anywhere.
  • Hazel is a nasty creature who likes to do everything on her own and doesn't believe in showing emotion. She has taught Leah to be the same.
  • As the water catches up to them, Finny, Leah, Obesey and Stayput go on a long water slide. Finny and Leah look really scared. They land in front of the griffins, then Obesey lands on them and they all fall into the water. Leah and Finny climb onto an iceberg and are alone in a large sea.
  • When the guards come to ask the captain's advice, Hazel and Dave hang Lion up while he's unconscious. They operate his hands and speak for him like a puppet. This is rather disturbing.

Ideas to discuss with your children

Two by Two is a colourful, animated movie about the biblical flood from an animal perspective.

The 'end of the world' theme might disturb children, and the scene that shows the escape from the rising waters is quite intense. There are also several violent scenes and scary characters. Therefore we don't recommend Two by Two for children under 5 years, and we do recommend parental guidance for children aged 5-8 years.

The main messages from Two by Two are that everyone has a place and that together we can achieve more than we can as individuals.

But the movie also has some conflicting messages, which might be confusing for children. For example, the nestrians are good and loveable creatures, but they're rejected from the ark. In contrast, the grymps are selfish and nasty creatures who only look after themselves, but they're allowed on the ark. At the end of the movie, the nestrians become sea creatures, but young children must not understand the meaning of this.

Values in this movie that you could reinforce with your children include friendship, caring, kindness and collaboration.

After the "set of strange names" is published, the discussion usually begins. Very often carried out in a light tone, misunderstanding why so many people by the surprising selection of names "hurts children". Is this really the case? Does the original name always cause problems for children?

One of the commenting people put it interestingly: "when I hear the strange name of a child, I already know everything about his parents."

Or maybe it would be worth looking at the subject a little broader?

Isn't it so that many names that were once considered "original" are not surprising today, after all, one can mention here: Klaudia, Sandra, Julia. Today they sound actually "familiar" to us, but several dozen years ago they were often considered "pretentious". However, someone paved the way and names "settled" in Polish reality. Today, most people consider them "normal", "ordinary."

However, is there a limit that you cannot go beyond? Who and on what basis would judge which name is too "original"?

The fact is, as evidenced by the published name registers every year, that international names come. Increasingly, parents are choosing names that are popular in the European Union and abroad. The possibility of giving such names exists since 2015. However, every parent must remember that there is a rule that says the name should not be diminutive, funny or offensive. Parents who have doubts about the choice of name can consult with the head of any Registry Office. The head of the Civil Registry Office is obliged to determine whether the name proposed by the parents meets the requirements provided for by law. A child can be given a maximum of two names.

The role of the midwife in the postpartum

It is very common for women to learn, read, ask and investigate everything related to the different stages of pregnancy and childbirth throughout their gestation. However, when the baby is born and it is time to go home, the mother has a million doubts about breastfeeding, physical recovery or baby care. It is then that you can resort, as you did during pregnancy, to the matron, a fundamental figure to help the mother postpartum.

It tends to think that the most important role of the midwife is in the birth process, however, her area of action is broader. And it is that this figure provides comprehensive care throughout the life cycle of women and in all its phases: reproductive health, climacteric and sexuality.

The midwife, whose role is recognized by the World Health Organization and the International Confederation of Midwives, deals with the health of women in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. In addition, its function is to help regulate fertility with contraceptive methods, advice on family planning, care during menopause or everything related to reproductive health.

And, specifically, it has a fundamental function once the mother has given birth for the recovery of mother and child:

- At 10 or 15 days after delivery, perform the mommy and baby scan and establishes a plan of care for herself and her newborn. Assess the baby's weight or the condition of the umbilical cord. As for the mother, check the bleeding and her general health.

- Offers advice for a correct physical and emotional preparation in the postpartum.

- Clarifies the most frequent doubts that arise to the mother at this time.

- In the specific case of breastfeeding, the figure of the midwife is of great importance. And it is that on many occasions, fatigue, pain or the circumstances of the family environment or hinder the learning process and are usually the cause of the abandonment of breastfeeding. The orientation of the midwife and their recommendations are essential for good breastfeeding. Being advised by her or consulting any complications that may arise is very important for proper breastfeeding.

- Once the quarantine is over, the midwife examines the pelvic floor and assesses its condition.
