Exercise colic (ETAP - exercise-related transient abdominal pain) is paroxysmal abdominal pain, which occurs during intense physical exertion (e.g. running or swimming). Her occurrence may cause justified anxiety of parents, and worse, alienate the child for further training. So what exactly is exercise colic in children, what are its causes and can it be effectively prevented?

Exercise colic - symptoms

Exercise colic manifests similarly in all children, regardless of the type of physical activity undertaken. Most often it is described as quite strong, sharp or stinging pain, which is usually located on the right side of the abdomen (in more than 50% of cases the right hypochondrium). What's more, the symptoms themselves are recurrent and disappear spontaneously after cessation of physical activity and a short rest period.

Exercise colic - causes

It has not yet been established what the exact cause of exercise colic is. Nevertheless, the most common factors causing it are:

  • Consumption of a large meal or plenty of fluid shortly before exercise - some studies report that more than 50% of exercise colic cases are associated with previous consumption of a heavy, especially heavy, meal.
  • No proper warm-up before exercise - it results in insufficient preparation of the muscular-ligament apparatus for increased physical effort (each workout should be preceded by a warm-up lasting several to several minutes).
  • Big stress before competition - exercise colic in a child may be his body's response to stress and result pressure from parents or toddler trainers.

  • Squeezing the sore spot - another easy-to-use technique is to press the painful place on your stomach quite hard without interrupting your exercise.
  • Breathing exercises - a few deep breaths and exhalations can bring a significant relief to the child and allow him to continue training.

At this point, however, it is worth noting that at the time when the techniques presented are ineffective, it is for the child's good to be advised to stop training and have a short rest time (however, the toddler should not sit down, as this may increase the pain).

How to prevent exercise spikes in a child?

There are no documented treatments for exercise colic. However, this does not change the fact that you can try to prevent it. Here are some simple tips:

  • Keeping the right distance between planned training and a meal - optimally, this time should be about 2-3 hours, although this time may be slightly different for each child.
  • Drinking still water instead of juices and sweet drinks - still water or isotonic drinks are the best way to hydrate during and after training. At the same time, their consumption is associated with the least probability of occurrence of exercise colic.
  • A proper warm-up before any physical activity - on the one hand, such action reduces the likelihood of occurrence of exercise colic, and on the other, it protects the child from unnecessary injuries and injuries resulting from underheating of muscles and ligaments.
  • Setting no excessive requirements for the child - physical activity, at least in the early stages of a child's life, should be directed towards play, the child's interest in sport, and not on results. Excessive pressure can only result in the toddler's exercise colic or other symptoms that can effectively alienate him or her from any form of training.

To sum up, exercise colic is a slightly underestimated topic and has not been sufficiently studied yet. Unfortunately, this means that there are still no clear guidelines as to its treatment and prevention.

Method of preparation
