Tradition of the martisor

Tradition of the martisor

I got you a martis!

Martisorul is closely related to the Romanian tradition: it is only met in the Carpathian space and in the surrounding areas, to Romanians and to some neighboring populations, who took it from them. The custom is long before Christianity, standing in connection with the ritual scenario of the agrarian new year, celebrated in the spring.

Until the last century, martyrdom was given to children and young people - girls and boys alike - from March 1st, before sunrise. The martis cord, consisting of two twisted wool yarns, colored in white and red, or black and white, represents the unity of opposites: summer-winter, heat-cold, light-darkness, fertility-sterility.

The rope was tied by the hand, held in the chest and carried, after areas, until Macinici, Flowers, Paste, Armindeni, or until the flowering of some fruit trees. Then it was hanging, as a beneficial sign, on the branches blossomed by the masks, vines, cherries, cherries, was put under the shell or hung on the icon.

The day of removing the martisor was marked by a party called "martisor's drink". With the passage of time, silver and gold coins were linked to the bicolor string. Today, from this string hangs handicraft objects, embodying different animals, flowers, letters etc. Some popular legends say that the martisor was twisted by Baba Dochia, probably an old agrarian deity, who, reaching the age of senections, dies and then reborn at the spring equinox.

"The rope of the year"

The martisor remains over the centuries "the rope of the year", which gathers together the weeks and months in the two ancient seasons of the popular calendar: summer and winter, symbolized by the two-color string.

In Geto-Dacians and Latinos the new year started on March 1st. March (mens Martius, "moon god Mars") was the first month of the year. This explains the names of September (seventh month), October (eighth), December (tenth). The popular Geto-Dacian calendar had two seasons: summer and winter. The martisor was a kind of talisman meant to bring good luck, offered by the new year along with the wishes of good, health, love and joy.

The white-red braid of the cord is found in the flag of the calusari, in the wedding tree, in the jewels of the juniors, in the sheepskin and in many other ancient customs. Romanian archaeologists have found in the prehistoric settlement from the Cladovei Schela, 8000 years old, river stones with traces of white and red paint. The combination of the two colors symbolizes the genesis and regeneration of life.

Between martisor and Women's Day

The traditional March 1 holiday, which has become an occasion to pay homage to the beautiful sex, should not in any way be associated with the communist-born pseudo-holiday on March 8. This so-called "Women's Day" is an innovation with ideological substrate, instituted in us only once with the communist regime (and which should have disappeared by itself, together with it).

The origin of the holiday is related to the name of the revolutionary activist Clara Zetkin, a kind of a shaved Ana Pauker, born in Wiederau (Saxony) and dead in the Archangelskoe (USSR), who launched the respective proposal at the International Conference of Socialist Women held in 1910 at Copenhagen.

The Communists and the Socialists held for the first time this "red" holiday in 1911. The day of March 8 was not chosen by chance: on this day, there was a great protest movement of the weavers incited to New York in 1857. "class struggle" and the abolition of traditional (including religious) values, in the atheistic-materialistic spirit of the revolutionary left.
